Zirconia Crowns

Zirconia crowns are a great option to consider when a crown is required. Zirconia crowns are a form of ceramic crowns that are known to be long lasting and extremely durable. We are able to mimic the look of your teeth so closely with zirconia crowns that it is nearly impossible to tell you have a crown.

What is a zirconia crown?

Zirconia is an extremely strong material which happens to be biocompatible. When something is biocompatible, it is easily accepted by the human body. The human body has no allergic reactions to zirconia.

Zirconia is a crystal that is known to be very tough and able to withstand all kinds of wear and tear. Because of this durability, zirconia crowns are often considered superior to porcelain and porcelain/metal infused crowns.

Advantages of Zirconia Crowns

The advantages of a zirconia are threefold. As mentioned above, zirconia is an extremely strong and durable material. You can count on your zirconia crown lasting a long time.

They are a great looking option when it comes to matching the aesthetic of your teeth. For someone to notice that you had a zirconia crown they would have to study it closely.

Finally, a zirconia crown allows you to retain more of your natural tooth than any other crown option. It is always favorable to leave more of the natural tooth in-tact in any dental procedure.

The Procedure

The procedure for having a zirconia crown fitted is not that different from having any crown fitted. The first step is tooth measurement and preparation.

We start the crown fitting procedure by taking an impression of your tooth. This impression gives us a mold of the tooth that we can send to a lab where the crown will be fabricated to the exact shape, size, and color of your tooth.

Once we have taken the impression of your tooth we will prepare it to receive a crown. Preparation involves shaving off the portions of the tooth that are no longer viable and shaping it properly. Once we have finished shaping your tooth we will fit it with a temporary crown. You will have the temporary during the few weeks it will take for your zirconia crown to be fabricated. The temporary crown will be affixed to your tooth with temporary cement so it is important to be careful with it as it can come off.

Once we receive your zirconia crown from the lab it will be time for the second visit to our office. During this visit we will remove the temporary crown and affix the zirconia crown using a permanent dental cement.

The finishing touches involve Dr. Daby making certain that the new crown fits in the bite of your teeth properly. Your teeth have the ability to shift around within your mouth which sometimes leads to your it changing slightly. If this is the case, just call us and schedule an appointment and Dr. Daby will be happy to alter the crown until everything feels correct.
