At Blue Sky Dental we are all about giving our patients options. It happens far too frequently with many dentists that the patient is given only one option in a situation where many are available. We know that giving you options and the education to make the decision that will work best for your life will take a little bit of extra effort on our part but it will pay off in your peace of mind – that’s our goal. Because we are all about options, we offer several different varieties of crowns, one of the best of which, is E-Max.
Why E-Max?When it comes to crowns there are a lot of options: porcelain, zirconia, gold, base metal, and E-Max just to name a few. All of these options have different and unique traits, that make them work well for some people and not as well for others. An E-Max crown is a type of ceramic crown which is made from a block of lithium distillate. This material is known for its durability and toughness as well as it’s very pleasing ability to mimic the look of natural teeth.
Because E-Max crowns contain no underlying base layer of metal, there is no grey line around the base of the crown. The lithium distillate gives E-Max crowns a strong, long lasting body, capable of many years of effective and comfortable use. Many other types of crowns run the risk of cracking or chipping with heavy use – not E-Max crowns.
Receiving an E-Max CrownWhen you need a crown, usually it is because your tooth has failed or is at high risk of failure due to cracking, chipping, or decay. If this is the case, we will make the recommendation that you have a dental crown placed. We will display the crown options that we have available to you. We will also go over the strengths and weaknesses of each different kind of crown and make our recommendation to you.
If you decide upon an E-Max crown, we will begin tooth preparation. Preparing a tooth to receive a crown is a straight forward procedure. First we take an impression of the tooth so that we have a mold of exactly what the crown’s size and dimensions are. We send this mold to a dental lab so that they can fabricate your E-Max crown with the perfect size and shape.
Next we shape your tooth to receive the crown. This involves shaving some of the enamel off of the tooth. We will end the too preparation by fitting a temporary crown onto your tooth.
At your second visit we will have your E-Max crown crafted and ready to be placed on your tooth permanently. Once the temporary crown is removed we will place the E-Max crown on your tooth with permanent dental glue. With proper dental hygiene you can expect your new E-Max crown to last you for many years.
